The AKS-74U small size assault rifle is a modified version of the AK-74 assault rifle with a shorter in 200 mm barrel. It was intended to replace AKMSU small size assault rifle, chambered for 7.62 x 39 mm cartridge. It was built on well recommended Kalashikov assault rifles scheme.
Initially AKS-74U was intended for airborne troops, but in case of low efficiency it found use among secondary units such as supply, communication, tanks and artillery crews, staff personnel. Furthermore it found use among anti-terrorist forces and special Internal Affairs Ministry subdivisions, and special forces.
Comparing with the AK-74, it's modification has lower bullet initial speed, shorter range of effective fire caused by shorter barrel. However, it still has more power and longer range than conventional submachine guns that fire pistol cartridges. It has a bit higher rate of fire than standard AK-74.
Tactically AKS-74U is very close to the Personal Defense Weapon category: it has small dimensions, chambered for intermediate cartridge, and is intended for a short range combat.
Rifle's automatic works on gas returning principle, threw a holes in the barrels channel walls. Assault rifle executes single or automatic fire. Reloading handle is placed from the right side. It is built in one part with a lock's frame. Safety-lock is a fire mode changer at the same time. It has three positions: safety-lock, automatic fire, and single fire. Safety-lock blocks barrel lock and prevents weapons reloading. Furthermore when it is turned on, reloading handle, pulled to it's backward position allows to check if cartridge is inserted in the barrel without reloading rifle
Weapon can be partially dismounted in a minute. Kalashnikv's construction weapons are easy in use and maintenance in case of measured and accurate construction. Soldiers all over the world prefer this easy construction of it's absolute reliability. Kalashnikov's weapon's usually don't misfire in any situations even fully immersed in mud or under the water. Chromed barrel make it available to use even in extremely low temperatures.
Small size assault rifle has a 30 (45) round plastic magazine reinforced by fiberglass. Pistol handle is made from plastic. AKS-74U has a folding metal butt stock, similar to AK-74.
Higher gas pressure at the end of the barrel channel forced developers to use a conical flash suppressor instead of a muzzle brake, used with AK-74. The device at the end of the barrel functions as an expansion chamber to bleed off gases which would otherwise cause a violent recoil. It can be changed with sound suppressing device.
It is fitted with L-type simple sight, intended for 350 - 500 m range. Muzzle sight is built-in with the gas chamber, which is a bit shorter than the one in the AK-74. The muzzle of either weapon fits into the swiveling firing points of the standard Russian armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles. Thus, the infantryman can fire the weapon while the vehicle is moving. the AKS-74U as a weapon short enough to be handled easily when the crew enters and exits vehicles.
AKS-74U assault rifle has AKS-74UN and AKS-74UN2 modifications, intended to use with NSPU and NSPUM night sights.
